Ayshe Abu Maghaseeb, 30, who commanded an underground PLO cell and says interrogators threatened her with rape and public humiliation: "Arab men don’t believe women should be in positions of responsibility." Zuheira Kamal of the women’s federations: "Men have an old boys’ network, but women don’t, so we are trying to beat them to it this time." Anam Tawil, 29, an architect who won a contract sought by 21 established Gaza firms. Ibtissam Badri Tahan, 33, of Shati camp, taken out of school at 15 to marry: "The house is like a prison. I hope my girls will have a better life."
