“I’ve since found out that this former home was 12 miles west of Jerusalem in the village of Sarees, what the Israelis now call Shoresh… He said he can still smell his land from here… What is wrong about people wanting to live on the land of their grandfathers? Why is it right for people to come from Germany and Poland and Morocco and take our land? You tell me that.”

A Sunday magazine insert carried in hundreds of American papers, in this case the Journal Star. It gives four people several hundred words each in the first person — Mohammad Abdul Mahfouz, 28, a clerk in Jerusalem; Munther Hammad Alsalhi, 23, a student in Cairo; Uriel Genossar, 25, of Kibbutz Hazorea; and a fourth. It is the largest uninterrupted grant of first-person space to Palestinians in this collection. The phrase the editors lifted out and set in display type was irreconcilable. Where Alsalhi says he admires Al Fatah, the magazine inserts a bracketed label inside his own paragraph.
