Israelis Jail Arab Student For Harboring Subversive

Transcribed from the clipping
TEL AVIV, March 12—An Arab student leader at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem was jailed today for nine months for harboring a subversive. He is Khalil Toame, secretary of the Arab Students Committee on the campus. Mr. Toame, in his fourth year at the faculty of law, has been prominent in left-wing student circles. Mr.
Toame acknowledged before a military court that he had sheltered Ahmad Khalifa, in his Jerusalem apartment but pleaded he had been unaware that the organization was illegal. Mr. Khalifa has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for activities endangering the security of Israel.
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The date is fixed from the page itself: the running head across the top reads 'WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 1968', and 13 March 1968 was a Wednesday, against a dateline of 'TEL AVIV, March 12'. The newspaper is identified from the printed credit line 'Special to The New York Times' under the headline. The folio prints the date but no page number on this cut, and the clipping is trimmed at both sides, so the page number is left empty rather than inferred. The excerpt is the whole article, about 620 characters; it is short because that is all the text there is, not because the transcription stops early. The stray comma after 'Ahmad Khalifa' is as printed. Read from crops magnified to six times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
