“United Nations, N.Y. The American Indian is getting genuine if lopsided support these days from some very unexpected quarters with definitely dubious motives. Old cowboys-and-Indians movies serve as evidence of America’s ‘genocide’ against the original inhabitants here.
The argument is made that the racial situation in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Arkansas ‘is not dissimilar from that in southern Africa in regard to discrimination against blacks.’ All this is taking place in the U.N.
Commission on Human Rights currently meeting here… The Convention on Genocide is a carefully worded legal document which defines genocide as a deliberate attempt to eliminate a nation, or a substantial part of it.
In other words — a mass murder or devastation of a people, perhaps something on the scale Hitler did to the Jews, or the Chinese Communists are in the process of doing to the people of Tibet… Thus, Egypt said Australians committed genocide by driving the aboriginals out of their land. The U.S. did the same to Red Indians.
The Israelis copied the Nazis in Palestine against the Arabs. Colonialism is ‘slow genocide,’ Nasser’s delegate stated… The U.S. delegate, Morris B. Abram, said these charges were ‘full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.’”

News copy, and the accusation is attributed rather than made, with the American answer printed in the last line. Notable because it places Palestine inside the anticolonial argument about the word, twenty years after the Convention.
