Transcribed from the clipping
THERE are other inhabitants in Palestine besides the Jews. The most numerous element are the Arabs. Most of them are Moslems, but whether Moslem or “infidel,” they have no liking for Turkish misrule. Strangers are astonished at the attitude of detachment shown by the Arabs toward the Turks.
Both are alike Moslems, but the Arab considers himself superior in intelligence. Between the attitude of the Turk and Arab toward their religion the difference is great. Though the Arab of Syria does not possess the fiery fervor of his brother of the desert, he takes his religion seriously.
It is an Arab religion, born of his country and race; its sacred books are in his language. The Turk, on the other hand, is a central Asiatic; his race has never produced a religion or even a heresy; he becomes conservative to what he has received, never questions its truth. But he remains a Turanian.
While the Arabs have produced many forms of dissent, it can hardly be said that the Turks have even invented a heresy. The Arab independence of views, as shown among the Wahabees, the Senussi (the most powerful of the Bedouins) and other dissenters, has always taken the form of returning to the simplicity of the early faith.
The result of the divergence of attitude between Arab and Turk has been to increase their mutual hostility.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
