WEST-BANK ARABS WARNED BY ISRAEL

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, Oct. 24 —The Israeli occupation authorities warned today that they would fire on west-bank Arabs violating curfews if that became necessary to maintain public order. The threat was included in new orders issued to security forces to impose curfews at the first signs of public protests and to use tanks if necessary to enforce them.
With the stricter security measures came reports that 3,000 schoolgirls demonstrated this morning in Nablus and that two other groups of students rioted in Jenin.
Both towns in the Israeli-occupied area on the west bank of the Jordan River were placed under curfew while Ramallah and Birah, where demonstrations led to violence yesterday, were released from their curfew after a visit by Defense Minister Moshe Dayan.
The Defense Minister, who has advocated a policy of Arab self-administration, said that while the Mayors could not be expected to assist the Israelis in finding saboteurs, they should be able to keep schoolgirls under control.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 2.2x to 5x by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by OCR and not by a person. No masthead or folio; the date follows the dateline 'JERUSALEM, Oct. 24' plus one day, and the paper is named by the credit line 'Special to The New York Times'. The year is corroborated by an unrelated theatre item sharing the scan, which reports the premiere of 'Big Time Buck White' postponed to Dec. 5 - that play opened off-Broadway in December 1968. 'Birah' is the paper's spelling of al-Bireh and is kept. The 3,000 schoolgirls of Nablus and the students of Jenin are counted and not named.
