“HAMBURG, West Germany (UPI) — Arabs, Jews and West Germans fought with fists, clubs and other weapons in Frankfurt and Hamburg universities Wednesday night. In Hamburg, Israeli ambassador Asher Ben Nathan was prevented from making a speech for the second time in three days by pro-Arab leftist students shouting ‘El Fatah . . . El Fatah.’… When the ambassador entered the discussion hall at Hamburg University he was greeted by a minutes-long chorus of whistles and shouts. The hall was packed with about 2,500 students and newsmen… There also was loud applause as placards hoisted on the platform by leftists were torn from their bearers. The placards bore such slogans as ‘Zionism is racism,’ ‘For the victory of the Palestinian revolution,’ and ‘Zionism must go.’ Then there was a mad scramble to get to the microphone… Some Arab students produced clubs and a UPI reporter saw at least one switch-blade knife appear in the hand of an Arab, before fellow Arabs took it away from him. For an hour, Ben Nathan tried to begin his speech. Eventually, he agreed to skip his speech and discuss the Mideast question with the leftists… The meeting broke up with no more fighting.”

The exact phrase, printed on a placard, six and a half years before the General Assembly voted. A wire reporter counted the signs in a lecture hall in Hamburg. Six years later the Boston Globe would photograph a demonstration in New York where a placard read anti-Zionism code word for anti-Semitism.
