Israelis Report Killing 13 Guerrillas

Transcribed from the clipping
TEL AVIV, Aug. 28 — An Israeli spokesman said today that 13 Arab guerrillas were killed during the night as they attempted to penetrate Israel from Lebanon and Jordan.
The biggest engagement was said by the spokesman to have occurred in the Jebel Ros area in Lebanon, near the border area where the Israelis recently set up positions on the slopes of Mount Hermon that they control.
The positions give the Israelis command over much of the rocky, hilly region between Mount Hermon and the Hasbani River, which the Lebanese Government has virtually abandoned to the guerrillas. Early this morning, the spokesman said, the Israelis detected a guerrilla force moving in the darkness from Shaba, Lebanon, toward Israeli-held territory.
In the engagement, seven Arabs were said to have been killed and one Israeli wounded. Three other guerrillas were reported killed in the Jordan Valley, east of Kfar Ruppin, a collective settlement that in recent weeks has been a frequent target of the guerrillas. One Israeli soldier was killed in that engagement, the spokesman said.
The three other Palestinians were reported to have died in a clash farther south in the Jordan Valley, in the Nahal Argaman sector. Israeli officials have noted a marked decline in cooperation between the Jordanian Army and the guerrillas.
Previously, it was said, the Jordanians frequently helped the Palestinians with intelligence data, provided covering fire and shelter in military positions. In recent weeks, the cooperation was said to have become infrequent and to have been confined to the lowest echelons.
The change was attributed to the apparent friction between the Palestinians and the Jordanian Government over King Hussein’s acceptance of the United States initiative for a peaceful settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The main guerrilla action in recent weeks has been on the Lebanese, rather than Jordanian, front.
