“UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. General Assembly voted three times Saturday in favor of a declaration that links Zionism with racism. Zionism is the movement backing Israel as the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Israeli delegate Ilana Ben Ami told the assembly its actions revived ‘the tendentious formula of 1975’ when it passed an Arab-authored resolution calling Zionism ‘a form of racism.’ ‘For the people of Israel, in the same way that Judaism cannot be divorced from Zionism, anti-Zionism cannot be divorced from anti-Semitism,’ she said. The assembly votes centered on a declaration of the U.N.-sponsored World Conference to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimation held in Geneva Aug. 14-15. The resolution spoke of ‘increasing relations between the Zionist state of Israel and the racist regime of South Africa’ and accused Israel of ‘racial discrimination’ against the Palestinians. The United States, which boycotted the Geneva conference, did not participate in the assembly voting. U.S. delegate Richard W. Petree said nothing had occurred to change the U.S. position.”

The sentence in the middle of this dispatch is the whole of the later argument, spoken on the floor of the General Assembly in December 1978 by an Israeli delegate: anti-Zionism cannot be divorced from anti-Semitism. Thirteen years before the resolution was repealed and thirty-seven before an American paper ran it as a headline. The Kansas City Star ran the same dispatch the same day and cut that sentence out. The paper spells it Discrimation.
