Ties Are Forged As Palestinians Work in Israel
By DAVID K. SHIPLER, Special to The New York Times

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, July 28 — At dawn on every working day a remarkable migration takes place across the lines of Arab-Jewish hostility.
As the muezzins’ mournful calls to prayer echo through the towns and refugee camps of the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, thousands of Palestinian Arabs leave their sleeping families, walk silently through the thin first light and board buses that take them to Israel proper — and to work. The military occupation has led to economic interdependence.
About 70,000 Arabs, one of every three in the labor force of the occupied areas, hold jobs in Israel, working for Jewish employers. They do mostly unskilled tasks, lifting and carrying on construction sites, waiting table and cleaning in hotels and restaurants, laboring in the fields and orange groves, and manning the assembly lines.
Although they represent only a fraction … [NOT TRANSCRIBED IN FULL — SEE needs_rescan AND note.
Only what I can read with certainty is given below.] West Bank Occupation Brings Jobs and Dependence Continued From Page 1 of the Israeli work force of 2.1 million, their concentration in the menial ranks of certain industries — especially building and agriculture — is said to have given them a disproportionate importance in filling roles that Israeli Jews do not want. [PHOTOGRAPH across the top of the page, with credit and caption:] The New York Times/Micha Bar-Am Arabs boarding buses in Gaza Strip for the trip to Israel, where they work for Jewish employers [The remaining six columns of body text are legible only at the word level and are NOT transcribed.
The crossheads I can read with confidence are: “Higher Pay, Neglected Farms”, “‘It’s Loss of Face’”, “Obedient, Prompt, Less Corrupt”, “Impact on Economy Feared”, “Standing Protective Agreement” and “Chance of Serious Dislocation”.
A separate, unrelated story runs across the foot of the clipping: “3 Iranian Captives Ill in New York”, By LES LEDBETTER.]
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from the slide scan by a reader working off magnified crops, not by optical character recognition. The newspaper is printed on the clipping, in the credit line “Special to The New York Times” beneath the byline. THE DATE IS NOT CONFIRMED BY THE PAGE. The clipping carries no masthead, no folio and no printed year; its only date is the dateline “JERUSALEM, July 28”, which is six days before the date recorded here. That date comes from the hand-typed slide label. It is either correct, with the piece held for a Sunday paper, or five days late, with the paper being 29 July 1980; nothing printed on the clipping decides it, and the year 1980 rests on the label alone. The excerpt is short because the clipping ends mid-sentence at the jump line “Continued on Page 12, Column 3”. The other part of this article was added on 2 November 2026 from a second clipping (m007_1.png).

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
