Jordan no Palestine state, Hussein says

“WASHINGTON — King Hussein of Jordan yesterday rejected declarations by Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon that Jordan is a Palestinian state and should become the permanent homeland of the Palestinian people.
Hussein, interviewed on ABC’s ‘This Week,’ said Palestinian territory must include land now occupied by Israel in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza.
Hussein, who said that he does not rule out the possibility that the West Bank could be a separate Palestinian state apart from Jordan, said his country has given the Palestinians a temporary home ‘awaiting resolution of their problem on their legitimate soil.’
Sharon, on a three-day tour of the United States, repeatedly has said that Israel would never agree to a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza. He also has stressed that he believed 75% of what is now Jordan was once Palestine, making Jordan the proper Palestinian homeland.
He reiterated that view yesterday in appearances on both CBS’ ‘Face the Nation’ and the ABC program. ‘The majority of the Palestinians are living in Jordan,’ Sharon said on CBS. ‘Jordan, as a matter of fact, is a Palestinian state. So we are not planning to establish a Palestinian state.
There is a Palestinian state.’… More than 700 U.S. and Canadian Jewish leaders applauded his remarks at the Washington Hilton… Bethlehem Mayor Elias Freij and Rashi Shawa, ex-mayor of Gaza, said on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ that Israeli talks with Palestinians in occupied territories are an illusion.
They added that Palestinians talking with the Israelis are ‘actually nobody whatsoever — they are collaborators with Israeli authorities.’ Freij, who said he was barred by the Israeli government from traveling to the United States for the TV appearance, said that it is an open secret that the United States collaborated with Israel in its invasion of Lebanon.
‘I am blaming the United States for what befell the Arab women and children and civilian people in Lebanon,’ Freij said.”
