Transcribed from the clipping

JERUSALEM, Aug. 10 [original dateline changed by censor] — The three Palestine Liberation Organization prisoners were handcuffed and wore cloth bags over their heads as they were led by an Israeli officer through the grounds of the military prison [18 words deleted here by censor] in northern Israel.

The three were captured in the first weeks of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the Israelis refer to them as “terrorists,” a term Israeli officials use for all people they regard as part of the Palestinian guerrilla group. But aside from that, and their headcovers and manacles, the prisoners had little in common.

They had joined the guerrilla organization under different circumstances. Each described a different role in the organization. The invasion of Lebanon meant something different to each of them. And each has a different hope for the future. They are among the 7,400 prisoners the Israelis say they have captured since the invasion began June 6. They are kept in cells.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead and no dated folio line, so the date recorded here could not be checked against anything printed on the page. Nothing on the page contradicts it.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
