Israel bars hunger strike by Arab mayors in Gaza

GAZA, Occupied Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip demonstrated yesterday with hunger strikes, business shutdowns and sit-ins against Israel's plan to deport Nablus Mayor Bassam Shakaa. Israeli troops thwarted an organized one-day hunger strike by Palestinian Arab mayors who had planned to meet at Red Cross headquarters here.
Soldiers stopped some of the mayors as they left their West Bank towns. They stopped others at the edge of Gaza. Gaza Mayor Rashid A-Shawa was turned back before he had walked 100 yards from his home. The protests were non-violent except for one reported rock-throwing incident in the Arab sector of Jerusalem.
Shakaa was arrested last Sunday and a committee of Israel's cabinet formally decided on Wednesday to banish him from the West Bank, where he is mayor of the largest town, Nablus.
No formal charges have been brought against Shakaa, but the government claims he is sympathetic to PLO terrorist attacks and cites his record of resistance to Israeli rule and frequent anti-Israeli statements, which it says amount to incitement. Shakaa has appealed the deportation order to Israel's Supreme Court, which has scheduled a hearing on the case for Thursday.
Yesterday's hunger strikes were declared in sympathy with Shakaa, who refused solid food for the second day. General strikes closed businesses in most West Bank and Gaza towns. All three West Bank universities were closed yesterday, normally a school day.
