Colony for U.S. Jews Is Approved by Israel

TEL AVIV, Feb. 7 — The Israeli Government approved the establishment today of a colony of American Jews in the Hebron area of the occupied West Bank.

The decision, made by the ministerial settlement committee, was not formally announced, but an official said that the colony would be an urban center to be called Efrat and that it would serve the cluster of Jewish settlements in an area called the Ezion block. The site will be on the eastern side of the Bethlehem-Hebron Road.

Rabbi Solomon Rivkin of the Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York was said to have recruited more than 100 settlers for the new community. Construction of the first 100 houses will begin in the next fiscal year, which starts on April 1.
