Arab-Americans Attack Treaty Over Issue of Palestinian Rights
By IVER PETERSON

Transcribed from the clipping
DETROIT, March 22 — North America’s largest Arab-speaking community here in Detroit does not respond to the proposed Egyptian-Israeli peace pact any more favorably than the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Jordan did to the Administration’s recent efforts to enlist their support for it.
From the immigrant slums of Dearborn’s industrial South End to the trim middle-class enclaves of Southfield, Arab-Americans see the treaty as fatally flawed by not being specific enough on Palestinian rights. “Don’t call it a peace treaty,” said Edward Ajlouni, an attorney, “because I honestly don’t think it will result in peace.
The problem will continue until the Palestinian people can return to a country they can call their own.” … No One Criticizes Carter “Maybe it will make peace,” said Chafik Hassein, a steelworker at the Ford Motor Company’s River Rouge plant.
For him, as for other recent arrivals, the tension and sporadic fighting in the area were an encouragement to emigrate. Their fresh memories of the uprooting may account for their yearning for peace. “Here everybody can live together,” added Mr. Hassan, 27 years old. “Maybe they can learn it from President Carter.”
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The page carries no masthead, running head or folio, so the date is not fixed from a printed date line; it rests on the slide label, corroborated by a dateline of 'DETROIT, March 22' and by the Egyptian-Israeli treaty, signed on 26 March 1979, being described throughout as still proposed. The newspaper is identified from the printed credit line 'Special to The New York Times' under the byline. THE EXCERPT CONTAINS AN ELISION, marked with an ellipsis. Two spellings on this page are NOT errors and have not been reconciled: the article prints both 'Edward Ajlouni' and 'Karim Ajluni' and states explicitly that the second man 'is not related to' the first, so these are two unrelated men, both lawyers, with near-identical names. One spelling inconsistency IS real and has been kept as printed: the steelworker is introduced as 'Chafik Hassein' and called 'Mr. Hassan' two paragraphs later, and a third man further down the column is 'Mohamed Hassen'. Read from crops magnified to between eleven and twenty times page scale.
