“JERUSALEM (UPI) — A Palestinian was killed in the occupied Gaza strip today as Moslem demonstrators burned tires and chanted in Jerusalem, protesting the Easter desecration of the Dome of the Rock mosque in Jerusalem.

The new demonstrations came as Israel asked for last minute assurances that Egypt will not violate the Camp David treaty by stepping over limits on military equipment and personnel in the Sinai, Israeli newspapers said today. Palestinian sources said four other Arabs were wounded by Israeli gunfire in the major West Bank town of Nablus following Moslem noonday prayers.

Clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinians, angered by the attack on the Islamic shrine in annexed Jerusalem, have left two dead and 27 wounded in the last five days. More than a 100 people on both sides were injured by rocks. There were hundreds of arrests.

PRIME MINISTER Menachem Begin made the request of Egypt as U.S. and Egyptian officials embarked on a flurry of diplomatic shuttles between Cairo and Jerusalem to ease Israeli concerns only nine days before its final withdrawal from the Sinai.

Israel also asked for guarantees that Egypt would never cooperate with the Palestine Liberation Organization or spread anti-Israeli propaganda in the area, the Yedioth Ahronoth and Ha’aretz newspapers reported. Begin asked U.S.

Assistant Secretary of State Walter Stoessel to make the promises, to be signed jointly by the United States, Egypt and Israel, an addendum to the peace treaty during talks Thursday, the newspaper Ha’aretz said. Officials said Stoessel planned to head for Egypt as Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Butros Ghali arrived with a message from President Hosni Mubarak to Begin.

STOESSEL MET Begin again today before going on to Cairo, said after two hours of talks with Begin Thursday he was ‘optimistic’ Egyptian-Israeli differences could be resolved before the April 25 pullback. ‘I continue my mission with a sense of confidence that the existing problems can be resolved satisfactorily,’ said Stoessel.

But a lightning trip to Cairo Thursday by Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Foreign Minister Kamal Hassan Ali failed to resolve the dispute. Sharon emerged solemn from two hours of meetings in Cairo and merely said ‘all problems’ were discussed.

But back in Israel, Sharon told reporters he received assurances Egypt would rectify any infractions before the pullback. Ali expressed optimism, but told reporters ‘more discussions are needed’ on the dispute over Taba, a 700-yard-wide area southwest of the Israeli port of Eilat where an Israeli tourist facility is being built.

ISRAEL ALSO has accused Egypt of violating the 1979 peace treaty by stationing extra troops in the Sinai demilitarized zone and failing to stop military supplies from reaching guerrillas in the occupied Gaza strip.

Israel’s state-run radio said an American inspection team will look Saturday into the alleged infractions and present its findings in time for the Israeli Cabinet meeting Sunday.”
