Boxed explainer beside the headline: “SOURCE OF FRICTION IN AN ANCIENT LAND. Differences of religion, language and national identity keep bitter dispute going. Moderate Israelis don’t want to see Arabs pushed out of area Jews seized in 1967.” And in the copy: “an Arab city in the Israeli-controlled West Bank… ‘We will continue with additional actions until there are thousands of Jews in Hebron. We have a timetable.’”

Four inches apart on one page: the dateline says the territory is occupied, and the box explaining why any of this is happening answers ancientness and difference. Nothing in the box is false. A reader would come away believing they had been told the cause, and the cause they were given is one nobody is responsible for.
