By Thomas Noland Special to The Journal-Constitution PARIS - He is not the kind of Ameri- can you would pick for the role: prisoner of the Palestine Liberation Organization, beaten on the soles of his feet with insu- lated electric cable, threatened with a pis- tol at his temple by a prison guard and spending hours huddied in the corner of his cell as Israeli bombs flattened the part of west Beirut directly above his head.
Rather than Kenneth Timmerman, a dreamy 28-year-old novelist who lives in a cozy book-filled apartment here, you would expect someone.. big Someone brash. Timmerman is tall and thin, almost delicate. He wears wire-rimmed glasses and open-necked shirts, cardigan sweaters and jeans.
