Israel Loosens West Bank Rules
Associated Press

Transcribed from the clipping
Tel Aviv Israeli authorities yesterday announced the easing of some restrictions on Palestinian universities in the occupied West Bank in an apparent attempt to get the school year started smoothly.
Initial reactions were mixed, but spokesmen at the three major campuses — Bethlehem University with 1200 students, Birzeit near Ramallah with 2400, and an-Najah in Nablus with 3300 — said there were crowds of students registering for classes.
Achiya Yitzhaki, spokesman for the Israeli civil administration, said Israeli security forces would not erect roadblocks near the schools to check incoming students and faculty members.
Yitzhaki also said the wording was being changed on a pledge that became a major point of dispute among Palestinian students and teachers — a declaration that they do not support the Palestine Liberation Organization.
