Censorship by Israel: How It's Carried Out

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, June 28 — Israeli military censorship applies to foreign newspaper and wire service dispatches transmitted from Israel during both war and peacetime on military and security issues. Under the rules, which are based on British emergency regulations from 1948, articles on these matters are to be submitted to the censor before they are sent abroad.
Correspondents thus are expected to exercise their own judgment, though those who attempt to send such stories without prior clearance sometimes find that midway through transmission, the censor cuts their telex lines. Accounts written by reporters in southern Lebanon behind Israeli military lines and brought back to Israel for transmission fall under the rules.
Reports about politics or the economy need not be submitted to censorship, though articles dealing with oil supplies to Israel do. Restrictions during wartime are somewhat stiffer for the Israeli press than for the foreign press.
How this transcription was made
Confirmed on the page: the credit line above the dateline reads 'Special to The New York Times'. — The dateline reads 'JERUSALEM, June 28' and the clipping carries no masthead or printed date, so a June 29 paper is consistent with Maria's label but the year is not on the page. Internal evidence — censorship of accounts written 'in southern Lebanon behind Israeli military lines' — fits the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in June 1982. — Maria's slide label lists 'New York Times June 29 1982' first and 'New York Times Jan 1 1974' second, but the images run the other way: s054_1 is the Jan 1 1974 Jerusalem election story and s054_2 is this June 29 1982 censorship piece. Her note about the censorship overview ('here's another one that doesn't explicitly call out Palestine') belongs to this image, not to s054_1. — This is the whole of the clipping — five short paragraphs. It is a sidebar, not a full article.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
