Palestinian child, 9, killed in riot, 29 Arabs deported

“JERUSALEM — Israel expelled four Arabs Wednesday and ordered 25 more deported, the military said. Israel Television reported that a 9-year-old Palestinian girl was killed when soldiers put down a West Bank riot.

Hospital officials said Israeli troops beat 105 Arabs in the occupied Gaza Strip, where a curfew remained in effect for a third straight day, and soldiers barred West Bank Palestinians from entering Jerusalem during a daylong protest strike. The army said the curfew would be lifted from the main Gaza Strip cities at 3 a.m. Thursday (8 p.m.

EDT Wednesday) but remain in effect in several of the coastal strip’s refugee camps. Eight West Bank villages also were under round-the-clock curfews, but the orders did not prevent scattered protests in which nine Palestinians were wounded.

Israeli radio reported six wounded in the Nablus area of the occupied West Bank, and the army said three were wounded in the Gaza Strip. In the West Bank town of Jenin, 9-year-old Rasha Artawi was killed while troops dispersed a riot, Israel Television said. It quoted Arab reports as saying the girl was killed by a stray bullet.

However, army officials told the television that a local doctor said the girl was killed by a stone. An army spokesman reached by The Associated Press said he had no information about the case. The fatality brought to 248 the number of Palestinians killed in the 8-month-old uprising. Four Israelis also have been killed.

The four deportees allegedly were members of outlawed Palestinian guerrilla groups and incited the Arab uprising, the army said. They were flown by helicopter to Lebanon, given $50 each and released, military sources said. They were identified as Mohammed Gharableh, Ahmed abu Muailek, Yusri Darwish al Hums and Fathi Ibrihim Shakaki, all from the Gaza Strip.

The United States has protested Israel’s policy of deportations, but Israel defends the measure as the most effective means of deterring violence. Since the Dec. 8 start of the uprising, 33 Palestinians have been deported.”
