“A small metal sign nailed high on a post marks the rutted, unpaved road as the Street of the Martyr… Hatem was the first to die in the Palestinian uprising… Hatem’s family still lives in the same four rooms along the Street of the Martyr, named after the dead teen… ‘If there is peace, the olive branch will be raised for the Palestinian state. But if there is no peace, the olive branch will be put in the pocket, and we will continue to carry the stone.’”

The same family as the Morning News clipping of December 1987, four years on, in a different paper — and it supplies what the first story could not: that Hatem Abu Sisi was the first person killed in the First Intifada, and that the street his family lives on is named for him.
