“It is moving to see the remaining inhabitants staying in their homes, their cows, sheep and donkeys killed and they themselves dead to fear or hope. They are completely cynical, anticipating no aid from anybody nor any defense of their case.”

Dorothy Thompson, from an unsolicited report sent to her by Americans living in Jerusalem, about Qibya on 14 October 1953. The word in the headline is

massacre, in 1953. Three years later, when Israeli border police shot forty-eight people at Kafr Qasim, no American paper in this archive uses that word until an Israeli court does, in October 1958. The word was available. It was not used.
