Israelis Deplore Advisory Panel Of Palestinians

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, Oct. 22 — Israeli officials said today that they were “most unhappy” with a Palestinian team that will attend the Middle East peace conference next week, and they called on the United States to insist that the group’s members have nothing to do with the Palestine Liberation Organization.
The Israelis stopped well short of threatening to withdraw from the peace process unless their demand was met. Nonetheless, one senior official charged that the Palestinians “are trying to provoke us,” and he cautioned that “at some point it could become too much.”
For Israel, the issue is not the official Palestinian delegation, 14 men from the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip who were formally named today and who will go to the peace talks in Madrid in tandem with representatives from Jordan.
‘People We Can Deal With’ Israel has already got what it wants on that score, having made sure, as a price for going to Madrid, that all 14 have no overt P.L.O ties and live in the occupied territories, but not Jerusalem.
“These are people we can deal with,” said Yosef Ahimeir, a senior aide to Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, who like other officials here was well aware of the names long before they were made public.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.
Context added by this archive
Date check: No masthead — the clipping is a single column cut from the top of a page, running from the three-line headline to the jump line. `pub` is confirmed by the byline block, “Special to The New York Times”. The date is not printed, but the dateline reads “JERUSALEM, Oct.
22”, the day before the labelled date, and the story says the Madrid conference is “next week” (it opened 30 October 1991). Both are consistent with `date` (1991-10-23).

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
