“Let’s get the facts straight. The Soviet Union put forth the infamous 1975 resolution equating Zionism with racism to appease Arab allies and frustrate the United States. It was not introduced, as suggested by a Press-Citizen editorial (Dec. 30), to ‘deter Israel from putting the establishment of the nation above human rights’… In 1975, 72 countries voted in favor of ‘Zionism equals racism.’ Of these, 18 permitted slavery, child slavery and debt bondage; 17 were rated worst in human rights violations in the World Human Rights Guide; and 15 restricted free practice of religion. Israel did not.… It is precisely the freedom of the press in Israel that allows us media access to the difficult situation in the administered territories. Repeal of the 1975 resolution merely rights a wrong committed by the United Nations two decades ago and exposes a new form of anti-Semitism.”

A reader answering his paper’s editorial, six weeks after the repeal, and arriving at the sentence that the rest of this section is about: that repeal exposes a new form of anti-Semitism. He closes by quoting a line on Zionism and anti-Semitism attributed to Martin Luther King Jr. That attribution is disputed: it circulates from a letter and a secondhand dinner anecdote, and it has never been traced to a documented King text or recording. The letter is printed here as the paper printed it.
