“Your Dec. 18 column dismissing the 1975 U.N. ‘Zionism is racism’ resolution as simply a product of the Cold War shows that, despite the Bill of Rights, there are some topics too sensitive for meaningful discussion in the Star-Telegram. It’s OK to consider whether President Bush conspired with Iran to delay the release of American hostages, to publish a comic strip suggesting that Vice President Dan Quayle used cocaine and to print photos of ‘Mapplethorpe art.’ But the charge that Israel, to which we give $4 billion a year, is founded upon the racist principle that Jews have the right to the land of Palestine, but Christian or Moslem Arabs do not, is somehow off limits. In 1948, more than 300 Arab villages were destroyed by Israel, and their inhabitants were expelled. After the 1967 war, some villages were razed, including Emmaus, mentioned in Luke 24 as the place where Christ appeared to his disciples after the resurrection. Is Zionism a form of racism? The Star-Telegram and President Bush don’t think so, and the United Nations has changed its mind. But if something walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it’s a duck, no matter what anyone says.”

Three weeks after the repeal, a reader in Fort Worth writes to say the vote settled nothing. The paper prints him on a page that also carries letters about the Internal Revenue Service and Japanese business books, under a standing box inviting readers to provoke thought and inquiry.
