“In new violence, Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip killed a mentally disabled Palestinian man and critically wounded a 13-year-old boy, Palestinian security officials said… In the Gaza Strip, Israeli soldiers shot and killed a mentally disabled and deaf Palestinian man walking a few hundred yards from an Israeli watchtower east of the Khan Yunis refugee camp, Palestinian security officials and relatives said. The army said soldiers fired only after the man ignored their warnings in Arabic and Hebrew not to come any closer. Soldiers also fired warning shots, the army said.… Near the Jewish settlement of Neve Dekalim, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy was critically wounded when he was shot in the head by Israeli troops, Palestinian witnesses and doctors said. The boy was watching a soccer game at the time, the witnesses said. The army said the youth appeared to soldiers to be at least 16 and was carrying a large bag as he tampered with a security fence… Soldiers warned him and then shot toward his lower body, the army said… ‘Maybe the best thing to re-open negotiations is the declaration of a Palestinian state. Maybe,’ Peres said. ‘I want to check it. I don’t reject it immediately.’”

He was deaf. The army’s account of why he was shot is that he did not respond to spoken warnings in two languages. The paper prints both sentences, one after the other, and draws no line between them. He is not named. Two paragraphs on, a boy shot in the head is answered by an army statement that soldiers fired toward his lower body. All of it runs above a furniture advertisement, fifty to seventy per cent off, just in time for the holidays.
