Anger and Isolation Roil Israeli Arabs

Transcribed from the clipping
UMM AL FAHM, Israel, March 24 — Ibrahim Siam has been a citizen of Israel for all of his 42 years. He has built a successful building contracting business here, and he lives in a spacious, comfortable home. But after a Palestinian suicide bomber from the West Bank killed six people last week aboard a bus just outside town, Mr.
Siam seethed with a rage that used to be uncharacteristic. “This is the answer for what the Jews of Israel are doing,” he said through clenched teeth. “They are the ones who ought to be blamed.”
The mayor of Umm al Fahm, Ahmad Eghbaria, settling into his office moments after a City Council meeting, said he had “mixed feelings” about the bombing. After all, “there were some Arabs on that bus.” For decades, when Israelis spoke of the Palestinian problem they were referring to the Arabs who live in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
But now the 1.4 million Palestinians who live inside Israel as full citizens of the state are growing increasingly angry, and some have become violent. The Israeli government is reacting with alarm; as security officials describe the situation, it is like a pot of water that has just reached boiling, the lid just beginning to rattle.
With attention, they say, the problem might be calmed. Instead, the two sides seem to be growing further apart.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.
Context added by this archive
Date check: No masthead or running head is present on this clipping — it is trimmed to the article and its photographs. The story dateline reads “UMM AL FAHM, Israel, March 24”, which is consistent with publication the following day, March 25, 2002.
The photo credit reads “Photographs by Rina Castelnuovo for The New York Times”, which confirms the paper.
