JERUSALEM, Tuesday, March 5 — Still burying its dead from the weekend’s bloodshed, Israel unleashed its anger at Palestinians throughout their territories on Monday.

Helicopters fired shells that landed near Yasir Arafat’s headquarters in Ramallah, and an Israeli tank shell ripped into a pickup truck there, killing a woman and her children before the eyes of passing schoolchildren.

Then early today a lone gunman armed with an M-16 assault rifle fired into a popular Tel Aviv night spot, killing three Israelis and wounding 30 before he himself was shot, the police said. [After the assault on the night club, Israeli troops raided the Palestinian controlled sector of Hebron in the West Bank and a Palestinian ruled town to the south, Dura, killing one Palestinian and wounding 10 others in exchanges of fire, Reuters reported, citing Palestinian security and hospital officials.] The Aksa Martyrs Brigade, a militant Palestinian group, claimed responsibility for the attack on the night spot, the Seafood Market Club, in a telephone call to reporters in Ramallah, identifying the gunman as Ibrahimi Muhammad Hassouni.

The police said he also threw two grenades and pulled out a knife to try to stab victims after he ran out of ammunition. It was not clear who killed the gunman. In all, at least 17 Palestinians were killed on Monday, after a weekend in which 22 Israelis were killed. Many of the dead from both sides were children and civilians.

From the two sides came ever louder vows of vengeance and violence, and there was no sign of any effort to break the vicious circle. “If the Palestinians are not being beaten, there will be no negotiations,” Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told reporters at Parliament. “The aim is to increase the number of losses on the other side.

Only after they’ve been battered will we be able to conduct talks.” Addressing a special session of Parliament, he said: “We are in a bitter war against a cruel and bloodthirsty enemy. We are fighting for our home, and we will prevail.”

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from the slide scan by a reader working off magnified crops, not by optical character recognition. The clipping carries no masthead and no folio. The date is derived from the printed dateline, which names its own weekday — “JERUSALEM, Tuesday, March 5” — and 5 March was a Tuesday in 2002; the year is fixed by the article’s content, Ariel Sharon as Prime Minister and the Seafood Market Club attack in Tel Aviv. The newspaper is not printed anywhere on the clipping: that attribution rests on the hand-typed slide label, corroborated only by New York Times house typography. The gunman’s name is set “Ibrahimi Muhammad Hassouni” and is kept as printed.
