JERUSALEM • The new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is in Jerusalem for talks with senior Israeli leaders, as violence spikes around the country. This is U.S. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford's first overseas trip since taking the job Oct. 1. He will meet with Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot, the commander-in-chief of the Israel Defense Forces and others. Navy Capt.

Greg Hicks says the latest violence may come up in meetings, but Dunford's visit was long planned and his goal is to meet his Israeli counterparts and reaffirm the United States' commitment to Israel. He also will visit other countries in the region.

Meanwhile, Palestinian assailants carried out five stabbing attacks in Jerusalem and the West Bank on Saturday, authorities said, as a month-long outburst of violence showed no signs of abating. The unrest came despite new security measures that have placed troops and checkpoints around Palestinian neighborhoods in east Jerusalem. At least four assailants were killed.

In Jerusalem, where most of the violence has taken place, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said a Palestinian, 16, drew a knife on officers early Saturday when they asked for identification after a bystander said he was behaving suspiciously. She said the officers shot and killed the teenager after he tried to stab them.

Later, another assailant tried to stab a policeman on the outskirts of Jerusalem, but struck his bulletproof vest and did not injure him. The assailant was shot and wounded. Police said when an officer approached to treat the attacker, he pulled out a second knife and attempted to attack him. He was then shot and killed.

The three other stabbing attacks Saturday took place in the West Bank city of Hebron, a frequent flashpoint where a few hundred Jewish settlers live in close proximity to tens of thousands of Palestinians.

How this transcription was made

Date confirmed on the page (eva-folio). Adjudicated corrected against the printed page: No masthead or folio; the margin above the headline is blank. The staged date is contradicted beyond argument by the text: "This is U.S. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford's first overseas trip since taking t. Filed under the archive’s spelling; the page prints “Baltimore Sun”.

Context added by this archive

The whole visible item is transcribed. Eizenkot appears as a name on a meeting list — the American chairman of the Joint Chiefs flying to Jerusalem to meet him — and the paper puts that in the first three paragraphs, then spends the rest of the item on Palestinians being shot. The juxtaposition is the record.
