Egypt pushes cease-fire as Gaza violence escalates

“GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Egyptian mediators worked to end a flare-up between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on Sunday… Wissam Jouda, who lives next to the house of a militant leader, said he was told to leave… Ahmed al-Qaissi, another neighbor, said the army had called him too… The dead included Khaled Mansour, a senior Islamic Jihad commander, and members of his family… Hamas, the larger group that rules Gaza, has stayed out of the fighting, possibly because it fears Israeli reprisals and undoing economic understandings with Israel, including Israeli work permits for thousands of Gaza residents, that bolster its control.”
