ON WAR-TRODDEN FIELDS
SYRIA AND THE HOLY LAND—FROM DAMASCUS TO JERUSALEM, WHERE THE KAISER AND THE SULTAN HAVE UNITED THE CROSS AND THE CRESCENT.
By JAMES MORGAN

Transcribed from the clipping
At the tomb of Saladin, in a court of the great mosque of Damascus, there lies a Maltese cross in a wreath of silver and gold. That cross is the tribute of the German Emperor to the memory of the greatest of the soldiers of the crescent.
The celebrated pilgrimage of Emperor William II to Palestine in [year illegible] marked the opening of a new era in a land of uncounted eras, and all up and down the Asiatic shore many things date from the time “when the Kaiser was here.” For seldom has the Caliph of the Prophet been honored with a call from a Christian monarch.
Roads were hastily improved and constructed for the visitor’s reception. Part of the old wall of Jerusalem, by the Jaffa Gate, was torn away to admit the Emperor’s carriage into the city, where wheeled vehicles never had been seen.
More than [number illegible] Turkish dignitaries were detailed to wait upon his majesty throughout his journey, and the Sultan exhausted the resources of Oriental hospitality in his attentions to his brother sovereign and guest. The Kaiser in the Holy Land.
Landing at Beirut from his yacht Hohenzollern, the august pilgrim and his Empress journeyed to Baalbeck and Damascus and afterward across the Plain of Sharon and over the Mountains of Judea to the Holy City.

Date check: the masthead reads THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE—DECEMBER 27, 1914, with the page number 41 at the right. This matches both `pub` and the slide date of 1914-12-27, and December 27, 1914 was a Sunday.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
