“New York demonstrators denounce United Nations resolution equating Zionism with racism.” The lead letter is by Benjamin Varon, former Ambassador of Israel to the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Paraguay, of Brookline. Five more follow, headed “Vote ‘a disgrace’” (Norman B. Meisner, Newton Centre), “Day of infamy” (Louis Lowy, Newton Highlands), “Zionism means freedom” (Steve Copeland, Hull), “Aimed at Christians” (Harry Cotton, Worcester) and “Get UN out of US” (Leo F. Kahian, Middleboro).

A full letters page a week after the vote, printed under a news photograph of a Jewish Defense League demonstration in New York. Three placards are legible in it. One reads NEVER AGAIN. One reads 20 COUNTRIES FOR ARABS ONE FOR JEWS. The third reads ANTI-ZIONISM CODE WORD FOR ANTI-SEMITISM — which is the argument that would be made in a headline forty years later, already on a stick, three weeks after the resolution passed.
