The Zionist Movement In Palestine
Interesting Discussion of Its Phases by a Leader Recently Escaped From Turkish Prison

Shown from the top. The whole column — 4.4 times taller than it is wide — is in the enlargement.
Transcribed from the clipping
“‘The Zionist movement in not of the moment, it is historical, and as long as we continue to live in history we will seek to develop a home for which a foundation has already been laid which has not been destroyed by the war,’ declared Zueibluvel, the Zionist leader of Palestine who has been banished by the Turkish government for taking an active part for his stand in the establishment of the Jews as an independent nation… ‘The economic conditions in Palestine are very severe,’ said the speaker.
‘The government has taken possession of the cattle and all productions for war purposes so that the colony is unable to carry on its work.
Grasshoppers, which have existed in Palestine for many years, reappeared this year and destroyed the plants and trees to the extent of 5,000,000 francs.’… ‘It was insinuated by many that money sent for the Jews in Palestine were also distributed among the Arabians,’ said Mr. Zueibluvel.
This is not true for the American consul ordered that it should be turned over where it was specifically stated it should be. But a ship load of food and medical supplies which was sent by the American Jews was given to all the colonies, including the Arabians because it was collected with that understanding.
He explained why the Turkish government has become aligned against the Zionists in Palestine, and said that it was because all the nationalities in Turkey are seeking to establish independent states while the war is going on.
Arabians who established themselves as an independent state under France were killed by the Turkish government, while many Jewish advocates who have been interested in the Zionist movement have been banished said the speaker.”
How this transcription was made
Masthead, city and page confirmed against the paper’s own page on a newspaper database. This is The Daily Item of Lynn, Massachusetts, not the papers of the same name in Sunbury, Pennsylvania or Port Chester, New York.
Context added by this archive
A lecture reported at length in a Lynn, Massachusetts daily in March 1916, reported at length. The word for the Palestinians here is the Arabians, and they appear twice.
Once as an insinuation to be denied — that relief money for Jews was also going to them — and once as people who did receive a shipload of food and medicine, because it had been collected on that understanding. And once more, at the end, as a nationality that tried to establish an independent state and was killed for it.
Three appearances, all of them in someone else’s sentence about something else.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
