PALESTINE LAND OF PROMISE
Farms Thriving, Trade Picking Up, New Cities Rising in Former Waste Places

Transcribed from the clipping
Dr. Harris, rabbi of Temple Israel of this city, has just returned from a three months’s trip to Palestine and Syria. His mission, he said, was largely sentimental. As an Israelite he wanted to see the land of his fathers. “Palestine, in the Bible,” he remarked, “was called the Promised Land. Today it is more than that.
It is the land of promise, a land of the future. Ideals of youth, muscles of youth, the brain and the dreams of youth are creating a life which makes a visitor feel that he sees a country in the making. The earlier conception of Palestine, or Jerusalem, to be exact, was a place where old, orthodox Jews wanted to die. Today it is a place where the young Jew wants to live.
“Most of the old Jews were maintained by charity. Some of that work is still going on. Conspicuous are the benevolences of Baron de Rothschild of France and Sir Moses Montefiore of England. The young groups, however, are self-reliant and self-sustained. They get help of a sort, it is true, but it is help that makes for growth.
Agricultural colonies have been subsidized by Zionists, but that help will more than be repaid in the years to come. Hadassah, the women’s section of American Zionists, is maintaining a hospital and medical research bureau. What that means for health and sanitation is evident.
The Joint Distribution Committee of America is sending funds for kindergartens, war orphans and milk stations. A generation of strong men and women is being built up. Not the least important of the work undertaken by the young and for the young is the program of the American-Palestine Companies, which is doing much to finance infant industries.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 8x to 16x with the contrast stretched; this is the softest type in the block and the lowest-confidence transcription among its articles. THE FOLIO IS CUT BY THE TOP EDGE OF THE SCAN, leaving only the lower halves of its letters. What survives is consistent with “THE NEW YORK TIMES, SUNDAY,” and THE DATE FIGURES ARE GONE with the rest of the line, so the page gives the paper and the weekday but not the date; 24 September 1922 was a Sunday, which is as far as the folio corroborates the label. THE STORY’S FIRST SENTENCE IS ALSO CUT by the same edge: the upper halves of its first two lines are sliced away, and the excerpt therefore BEGINS AT THE SECOND SENTENCE rather than reconstructing the missing words. The hand-typed slide label gave the paper without its definite article, which this archive’s spelling and the folio both carry; the record follows the archive. The story is unsigned. “A three months’s trip” is as printed. The whole of the direct speech on the page is the visiting rabbi’s.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
