“Jerusalem, July 19. — (J.T.A.) — An official statement warning the population against panic, was issued by the Palestine government following the slight shock of Sunday. The statement assured the population that according to seismological advice, no new shock is to be anticipated, as only a minor tremor is possible. An appeal to Moslems throughout the world to create a Palestine relief fund was issued by the Grand Mufti, the ecclesiastical head of the Palestine Moslems. The Grand Mufti’s appeal fixes the amount of damage caused by the earthquake at £4,000,000. The damage in Nablus alone amounts to £1,000,000, the appeal states. The Palestine government, it was learned, has informed the municipality of Tel-Aviv that it does not find it necessary to accept the offer of Tel-Aviv Jewish volunteers to clear the debris. The government workers will be in a position to handle the situation, the government stated. 200 Killed, Latest Report. London, July 19. — (J.T.A.) — An official report from the Palestine government received by the Colonial office states that the number of persons killed in Palestine is 200, the number seriously injured, 356, and that 375 were slightly injured. The survey, which has as yet not been completed, shows that 1,000 houses were severely damaged… Little damage was suffered by government buildings. Buildings of antiquarian interest have escaped lightly. The gravest casualties and the greatest damage occurred in Nablus, Lydda, Ramleh and Jerusalem. The roads in Palestine suffered little damage. In Transjordania, 62 persons were killed, while 102 were injured… Vatican Sends Relief. Rome, July 19. — (J.T.A.) — The amount of 50,000 lire was despatched by the Vatican as a relief fund for the victims of the Palestine earthquake. The fund will be administered by the Patriarch of Jerusalem.”

Two hundred dead, the worst of it in Nablus, Lydda, Ramleh and Jerusalem, and the two facts the deck selects are that no Jews were killed and that Jews of Tel Aviv are aiding anti-Semitic Arabs. The archive holds the same earthquake in a Texas paper eight days earlier, where a correspondent walks through Nablus among the bodies and the casualties are counted by naming the one Christian, one Samaritan and one Jew among them. Both papers arrive at the dead by describing who they were not.
