“My dear Weizmann, Events in Palestine have moved me to indignation and disgust, but they do nothing to shake my confidence in the general wisdom of the policy… The warning even at this distance has for months been clear and unmistakable. There has been restlessness and mutterings and threats all along. Where these things failed to mean anything to those in charge of affairs or why they failed to bring action upon their part, I am frank to say I cannot understand… Yours most sincerely, BALFOUR.”

August 1929. The archive holds six American papers from this fortnight, in six registers: a Mississippi daily, a Texas daily’s map, a Communist photo spread, a Jewish weekly’s front page, a Virginia column of wire datelines, and a Buffalo weekly a week later. Balfour’s own letter, dated 30 August 1929, twelve years after his declaration. The page also reports the Madison Square Garden meeting that The World News had announced nine days earlier, and gives the Arab response its own headline: Arabs Term Commissioner’s Statement ‘Extremely Unjust’.
