Gaza

“Gaza, bombed last week by the Israeli Air Force during Palestine fighting, is a grubby, gray town of 40 thousand Arabs. It has had a bloody history of war from Genesis to the present day. Mentioned in Genesis (10:19) as the southernmost city of the Canaanite Kingdom, Gaza was biblically noted as the place where Samson was blinded and imprisoned.
It was sacked and rebuilt innumerable times. Alexander the Great besieged it. Genghis Khan and Napolean played roles in its history. The British stormed it in early November, 1917. Gaza became world renowned two thousand years ago by its production of light cloth of peculiar quality. This ‘Gaza cloth’ went into the English language as gauze.”
