Hammarskjold Hears Complaints at Gaza

“GAZA, Dec. 26 (AP).—United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold today ended his three-day visit to the Gaza Strip by calling at two refugee camps. He was greeted by shouts of ‘We want to return to our homes.’ Thousands of Arab refugees from Israeli Palestine lined his route to the camps carrying banners reading ‘Welcome to Palestine, Hammarskjold. We demand immediate repatriation.’ About one million Palestinians were driven from their homes during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Many of them live in this strip now administered by Israel and guarded by a U. N. emergency force. One refugee student complained to Mr. Hammarskjold that students who graduate from secondary schools cannot find work and that UNRWA (United Nations Work and Relief Agency) is doing nothing to help them. The student complained that the U. N. alloted more money to the UNEF than to UNRWA. Mr. Hammarskjold answered that he and his assistants were working within the limits of money given by U. N. members. Mr. Hammarskjold also visited Dier Elbalah camp where 3,000 refugees are living. He arrived Tuesday to spend Christmas with UNEF contingents patrolling the demarcation line separating Israel and Gaza.”

The verb is driven, and the noun is Palestinians, in Associated Press copy in 1958. Ten years of wire stories had said fled, left, evacuated and reached. The people shouting at the Secretary-General are quoted in the second sentence, and what they shout is that they want to go home.
