JERUSALEM VENDOR POPULAR ON HOLIDAY

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM (Israeli Sector), April 18—Salim Hussary became today probably the most popular man in Jerusalem. He is a retired grocer and a Christian Arab and as such he is the only person authorized to sell bread to the non-Jewish population in the city and the surrounding area for the week of Passover, which began tonight with the rise of the first full moon of spring.
Long before sundown the last grocers in Jerusalem had cleaned out their stores of bread and at least symbolically of beer and noodles and anything else with a vestige of ferment that could make dough rise. Throughout the day housewives came in a steady procession to the little stone house of Salim in the former Greek colony of Jerusalem to place their orders for bread.
By the end of the day he had taken orders for 3,100 loaves, which he will fetch in three trips through the week from a bakery that will stay in operation in Tel Aviv.
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from the slide scan by a reader working off magnified crops, not by optical character recognition. The newspaper is NOT printed on this clipping — there is no masthead, no folio, no byline and no credit line — so the attribution rests on the hand-typed slide label alone. The date is derived from the printed dateline, “JERUSALEM (Israeli Sector), April 18”, and fixed to the year by the one astronomical fact in the text: Passover “began tonight with the rise of the first full moon of spring”, and Passover began at sundown on 18 April in 1962. 19 April 1962 was a Thursday. The man the article is about is described by the paper as a retired grocer and a Christian Arab; the word Palestinian does not appear on the clipping, and in 1962 he was living in the Israeli sector of a divided Jerusalem.
