Captured Papers Linked To Arab Arrests in Israel

Transcribed from the clipping
TEL AVIV, April 12 — Israeli security forces reported arresting a number of suspected Arab guerrillas in Israel and the occupied territories last night and today on the basis of documents described as having been seized Tuesday during the Israeli commando raid in Beirut.
The Israeli radio reported tonight that “scores” of suspects had been picked up in the last 24 hours, but reliable military sources said that “scores” was inflated. They confirmed, however, that arrests were continuing. “We got a lot of good information in Beirut,” one military source said, “but our men are still sifting through it.
It’s too early to say how many people will be arrested as a result or what the consequences will be.” Data Called Voluminous The documents, which the sources said were voluminous, were reported seized by the Israeli commandos who broke into the apartment of Kamal Adwan, one of the three guerrilla leaders assassinated during the raid.
The papers reportedly included plans for guerrilla actions against a number of sites in Israel in connection with the celebration May 7 of the 25th anniversary of Israeli independence. Incidents of sabotage also reportedly were scheduled for the eve of the anniversary, when it is estimated that 100,000 tourists will be in Israel.
According to reports from Beirut, the seized documents also included copies of the codes used by guerrilla radios to communicate with agents in Israeli territory. The guerrilla radio in Cairo broadcast warnings to this effect yesterday. Israeli officials declined to comment on these reports.
Meanwhile, the Arab residents of the occupied West Bank demonstrated their sympathy for the guerrilla cause today with a memorial service for Kamal Nasser, another of the slain leaders. The service was held in Beit Zaid, a small village northeast of Jerusalem, where Mr. Nasser was born. A number of leading Arabs were reported to have attended.
In addition, other Arab leaders placed notices in the Arab papers published in East Jerusalem mourning the killing of the “martyrs” in the Beirut raid. The notices drew the anger of the Defense Minister, Moshe Dayan. Speaking at a Labor party gathering in Tel Aviv tonight, Mr. Dayan said heatedly: “When I see those things, I explode.
But I realize that if we are going to give them freedom of expression — and we must—then we will have to put up with it.”
How this transcription was made
One clipping, one scan. A second, unrelated article sits below in the right-hand column — “BONN PARTY SPURNS ANTI-U.S. POSITIONS” (HANOVER, April 12), about the West German Social Democrats — which is not transcribed here and is not about Palestine. — Running head across the top of the clipping is cropped at the left but reads “S, FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 1973” — the tail of THE NEW YORK TIMES. 13 April 1973 was a Friday. The credit line reads “Special to The New York Times”. Matches Maria’s label.
