Israelis Retake Kibbutz Nursery, Kill 5 Terrorists, Free Hostages

Transcribed from the clipping
MISGAV AM, Israel, April 7 — Israeli troops stormed a children’s dormitory on this kibbutz today, killing five Palestinian terrorists who had taken a group of children hostage in a bid for the release of guerrillas from Israeli prisons. A two-and-a-half-year-old boy in the dormitory was killed, possibly by the terrorists, and four other children were slightly wounded.
The kibbutz secretary, 38, was shot to death as he fought the guerrillas with his bare hands when they first entered the compound, near the border with Lebanon, after 1 o’clock this morning. An Israeli soldier was killed during a first unsuccessful rescue attempt about 2:30 A.M.; 10 soldiers and one civilian were reported wounded.
Afterward, wind blew through the shattered windows of the children’s house, whipping shredded, brightly colored curtains like torn battle flags. One side of the mattress in a crib in a corner was soaked with blood. Toys stood cracked and splintered by bullets.
Spent brass cartridges from the Soviet-made Kalashnikov rifles the terrorists carried lay scattered on the floor, among tiny shoes and toy teacups and books of fairy tales. The terrorist attack, the most serious in a year, coincided with the departure of President Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt for talks in Washington on granting self-rule to Palestinians under Israeli occupation.
The attack was regarded as likely to stiffen the resistance of Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel to transferring substantive power to the Palestinians. Prime Minister Begin flies to Washington next week.
