Arab Student Is Disciplined

Transcribed from the clipping
TEL AVIV, April 15 — An Arab student at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem was ordered expelled from his campus dormitory today for having blown out a memorial candle on Sunday, Holocaust Memorial Day.
The student, Ihsan Sleman, 19 years old, will also be refused dormitory accommodation next year, according to a decision by the disciplinary committee of students’ hostels. The committee consists of two faculty representatives and one member of the students’ union. Mr.
Sleman, a first-year student of mathematics, was given 10 days to find alternative quarters and may also appeal. In his appearance before the committee, Mr. Sleman maintained that he had not been aware of the symbolism of the candle, declaring he had thought it was lit during the night because of a power failure. A maintenance worker in the dormitory said he had seen Mr.
Sleman blow out the candle between 5 and 6 A.M. on Sunday. The committee rejected Mr. Sleman’s, explanation, maintaining that since he had been born in Israel and spoke Hebrew, he must have been familiar with Holocaust Day.
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The page carries no masthead or folio, so the date is not fixed from a printed date line; it is corroborated from inside the article, whose dateline reads 'TEL AVIV, April 15' and which places the incident on 'Sunday, Holocaust Memorial Day'. Yom HaShoah fell on Sunday 13 April in 1980, and 15 April 1980 was the Tuesday following, which fits a 16 April paper. The newspaper is identified from the printed credit line 'Special to The New York Times'. The piece is unsigned beyond that credit and no page number is printed. The stray comma in 'Mr. Sleman’s, explanation' is as printed and has not been repaired. Read from crops magnified to seven times page scale.
