TEL AVIV, Aug. 30 (UPI) — Explosives inside a cart blew up today in the occupied West Bank town of Nablus, killing an 8-year-old Arab girl and wounding 14 people in the open-air market, an Israeli military spokesman said.

Among the wounded was the man wheeling the cart, who the army said was a suspected Palestinian guerrilla transfering the explosives through the crowded market. “This is purely a terrorist project,” an army spokesman asserted. The 8-year-old daughter of a cigarette vendor was killed by the explosion, the army radio said.

The wounded, including one person who was seriously hurt, were taken to a Nablus hospital.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
