JERUSALEM, Sept. 28 — The Israeli authorities have revoked the residence papers of a Palestinian-American who encourages Arabs in the occupied territories to engage in nonviolent action against the Israeli occupation. The Palestinian-American, Mubarak E.

Awad, director of the Jerusalem-based Palestine Center for the Study of Nonviolence, is one of few Palestinian leaders who openly condemns violence, and the only one who actively promotes and teaches nonviolent theories of resistance.

The police questioned him extensively last week about a pamphlet he wrote suggesting that Palestinians in the occupied territories refuse to fill out forms in Hebrew, that they boycott Israeli goods and that they lie down in front of bulldozers clearing land for Israeli settlements — rather than engaging in guerrilla activity and hurling rocks at Israeli soldiers.

The pamphlet, “Nonviolent Resistance: A Strategy for the Occupied Territories,” was published in 1983 by New Society Publishers in California. Financed by U.S. Professor “This is the first time I have been interrogated about something I wrote, and not something I did,” said Mr. Awad, a 44-year-old native of Jerusalem who is an American citizen. Mr.

Awad, a psychologist whose wife and children live in the United States, started the center two years ago and runs it with 13 volunteers. The center is financed primarily by Hisham Sharabi, a Palestinian-American professor at Georgetown University.

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The folio 'A16' is printed at the head of the clipping and is recorded, but THE FOLIO LINE CARRIES NO DATE on this cut - the clipping is trimmed just below the rule, so the running head's date is not on the scan. The date therefore rests on the slide label, corroborated only by a dateline of 'JERUSALEM, Sept. 28'; the year is not independently fixed from the page, whose internal dates are 'last week' and a pamphlet published in 1983. The newspaper is identified from the printed credit line 'Special to The New York Times' under the headline. The piece is unsigned beyond that credit. The subject is a Palestinian-American organisation director whom the article itself calls 'one of few Palestinian leaders', so he is a named Palestinian but not an ordinary one. Read from crops magnified to nine times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
