The Jan. 8 Herald Examiner contained an Op-Ed column, “No Palestinian homeland, then more riots,” by Edward Said, a member of the Palestine National Council, the political face of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Said’s recounting of the history behind the issue started with 1971. From 1949 through 1967, however, Gaza was under Egyptian rule.
The economy was a shambles, as no Arab was allowed into Egypt to work. Gaza was an Arab ghetto where poverty and disease were rampant. At that time the only national movement in Gaza was the Fedayeen, who used Gaza as their base for terrorist attacks against Israel. From 1967 to the present, Gaza has been under Israeli rule. Some 30,000 Arabs travel daily into Israel to work.
