JERUSALEM, Aug. 31 — Three Palestinian demonstrators died today as a result of gunshot wounds sustained in clashes with Israeli troops. It was the highest death toll in several weeks. Two of the three were teen-agers. One died in a Tel Aviv hospital from a wound suffered during demonstrations on Tuesday.
The deaths occurred on the second day of a general strike across the West Bank and Gaza Strip called to protest Israel’s recent decision to expel 25 Palestinians. During a general strike, all shops and businesses in the West Bank and Gaza Strip close for the day, and Palestinians generally stay off the roads.
Cities in the occupied territories look deserted, except where demonstrations are occurring. Palestinians said Khamis Almeenawi, 17 years old, of the Gaza Strip was shot and killed during violent demonstrations in Gaza this evening.
Also this evening, Palestinians said, Ayman Achmed Najar, 16, died of a gunshot wound to the head suffered during demonstrations at the Rafah refugee center Tuesday. At least eight other Gaza residents were reported wounded by live ammunition today.
On the West Bank, Louai Barbouti was shot and killed during riots that broke out as Israeli troops tried to make arrests in the village of Deir Ghassaneh near Ramallah. With the new casualties, at least 233 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops since the uprising began last December.
At the same time, officials reported that a Palestinian found beaten to death in Hebron three days ago was killed because he had been caught trying to rob a store, not because he had collaborated with the Israeli authorities, as some had suspected at the time.
On Sunday, some Palestinians said the man, Samih Yousef Dababseh, was killed because he had been working with the Israeli security police. His body was found tied to an electric pole. But today, Israeli officials said they had learned that residents had taken revenge for repeated criminal acts and tied him to a pole as an example for others.
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from the slide scan by a reader working off magnified crops, not by optical character recognition. The clipping carries no masthead, folio, running head or page number, and no year is printed on it anywhere. The newspaper is printed in the credit line “Special to The New York Times”. The day and month come from the printed dateline, “JERUSALEM, Aug. 31”. The year is fixed by what the article reports — a general strike against Israel’s recent decision to expel 25 Palestinians, and at least 233 Palestinians killed “since the uprising began last December”, which is the first intifada and 1988. The slide label read 1 September 1998; that year belongs to the other clipping on the same slide, a 25 October 1998 report held in this archive as CP-1998-028. The year is corroborated by four other pages this archive already holds: CP-1988-053 of 18 August 1988 reports the order to deport 25; and the running toll reads “more than 200” on 17 July 1988 (CP-1988-071), 233 here, “at least 280” on 7 October 1988 (CP-1988-072) and “at least 310” on 11 November 1988 (CP-1988-054). 31 August 1988 was a Wednesday, which closes the article’s references to Tuesday and to the second day of a general strike; 31 August 1998 was a Monday, and that arithmetic does not close.
