Transcribed from the clipping

I would like to clarify the caption accompanying a picture illustrating the article “The Ambiguous Yasir Arafat” (by Marie Colvin, Dec. 18). In the caption, I am described as an Arafat associate. I am not Mr. Arafat’s associate. I am a Palestinian student, studying in Paris, and working as a journalist for an Arab news agency. I was in Algiers as a journalist.

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. NO DATE IS PRINTED ON THIS CLIPPING and nothing on it names the newspaper, so both the date and the publication rest on the slide label. The only internal date is the letter's reference to an article published 'Dec. 18', which leaves a gap of roughly twelve weeks to the labelled publication date - long for a letters column, and a reason to treat the date as unverified rather than merely unprinted. The item is a letter to the editor; the recorded headline is the bold line above the letter, which in a letters column serves as the letter's own head, and the recorded byline is the signature as printed, in the form the archive already uses for letter signatures. The photograph reprinted above the letter carries only a photographer's credit and NO CAPTION, so the caption the writer is objecting to is not reproduced anywhere on this scan and cannot be checked from it. Read from crops magnified to nine times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1989-048.
