Israel Refuses to Recognize Greek Orthodox Patriarch

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, April 25 — The Israeli government has once again refused to recognize the new Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem, the custodian of most of the Christian religious sites in the region. The patriarch, Irineos, was elected by the bishops of the Jerusalem patriarchate in August and enthroned on Sept.
15 as the leader of the oldest and largest church in the Holy Land. Since then, however, the Israeli government has refused to grant him formal recognition, a decision the cabinet restated on Sunday. … Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, whose lands are part of the Jerusalem patriarchate, endorsed Patriarch Irineos, but Israel refused.
In an interview with The Jerusalem Post in November, Patriarch Irineos declared, “I am not pro-Palestinian, nor pro-Israeli, nor pro-anything. I am only pro-God.”
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The page carries no masthead, running head or folio, and NOTHING ON IT NAMES THE NEWSPAPER - the one credit is to Agence France-Presse, which identifies the picture agency, not the paper - so BOTH the date and the publication rest on the slide label. The date is corroborated only by a dateline of 'JERUSALEM, April 25', by the cabinet having restated its decision 'on Sunday', and by the Church of the Nativity siege being current. The slide's other image for the same date does carry a New York Times photograph credit, which anchors the slide as a whole. 'JERUSALEM' above the headline is a department flag, not a deck. THE EXCERPT CONTAINS AN ELISION, marked with an ellipsis, so that the closing quotation sits inside the record's press text; that quotation is one the Times took from an interview published in The Jerusalem Post, not one of its own. Read from crops magnified to fourteen times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
