Middle East: Long list of short lives
By HUGH DELLIOS

Transcribed from the clipping
Diya Tmeizi. Koby Mandell. Faris Odeh. Shalhevet Pass. Burhan Himuni. Yehuda Shoham. Mohammed al Dura. The list goes on. They are children as young as 2 months, both Israeli and Palestinian, whom the world got to know in the past 15 months because they died.
As we all watched in horror, their parents grieved after they were shot down by soldiers or snipers, stoned through the windshield of a car, found bludgeoned in a cave, torn apart by a helicopter missile. Already more than 200 names long, the list of dead children and devastated parents will be longer in a year.
And quite likely the world will still be asking: How can fathers and mothers let this go on? The dawn of 2002 brought no end in sight to a conflict in which the protective love of parenthood is no match for the forces that put Mideast children at risk every day.
While the Bush administration vainly tries to coax a cease-fire from lulls, vicious terror attacks on coming-of-age bat mitzvah parties and the bulldozing of Gaza homes where hundreds of children live give no hint that the Israelis and Palestinians are preparing peace and safety for the next generation.
How this transcription was made
Date and publication rest on the collector's slide label; no masthead, folio or printed dateline appears on this clipping. Filed under the archive’s spelling; the page prints “Atlanta Constitution”.
Context added by this archive
Clipped article, no masthead, no folio, no printed date; date is label-only. There is no deck. The pull quote in column two, 'Each side pushes on with attacks that inevitably kill children', is a pull quote taken from the body, not a deck.
WIRE-COPY DIVERGENCE AND DATE CONFLICT: this is the same Hugh Dellios column that the Wilmington Morning Star / Star News ran on slide 67 under a different headline, 'Arabs, Israelis killing children'.
Maria dates this one 28 Jan 2002 and the Star News one 30 Jan 2002, two days apart, which is ordinary for a syndicated column; neither clipping carries a printed date, so neither date can be checked against the page. The two texts are not identical.
Atlanta prints 'in the past 15 months' where the Star News prints 'in the last 15 months'; 'will be longer in a year' for 'will be longer in a year's time'; 'More than a year ago, the Palestinian intifada' for 'A year ago, the Palestinian intifada'; 'near Tekoa' for 'in the desert near Tekoa'; an em dash before 'before Jewish vigilantes' where the Star News sets an en dash.
Atlanta also CUTS a phrase: where the Star News asks 'For the sake of their children, how can fathers and mothers let this go on?' Atlanta prints only 'How can fathers and mothers let this go on?'. Atlanta runs several of the Star News's separate paragraphs together. Columns two, three and four were read at page magnification; column one was transcribed from magnified crops.
Tagline at the foot: 'Hugh Dellios just completed three years as the Chicago Tribune's Middle East correspondent.'

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
